Salar De UyuniWith an area of almost 11.000 square kilometers Salar de Uyuni is the largest saltflat on earth and an important source for salt and other natural resources, such as lithium and magnesium. The Bolivian government maintains a strong control over the exploitation of the salt-flats and does not allow foreign companies to exploit the area. Instead the government operates its own plant with limitations on the extraction. Aside from this, Salar de Uyuni serves as a major tourist attraction as well as a transportation route over the Bolivian altiplano.
